How to Get Beautiful, Joy-Filled Confetti Photos
Confetti photos are one of the most joyful and iconic moments of a wedding day. That burst of colour, movement, and celebration perfectly captures the excitement just after the ceremony.
As a wedding photographer, I’m often asked how to make confetti photos look their absolute best. Whether your venue allows traditional paper confetti, petals, or fun alternatives like bubbles and streamers, a little planning goes a long way. Below are my top tips to help you achieve stunning, camera‑ready confetti photos.
Can you have have too much confetti?
When it comes to confetti photography, more really is more. A light sprinkling can disappear on camera, especially in outdoor spaces. For the best effect, allow one and a half to two large handfuls of confetti per guest. This creates a beautiful cloud of confetti that fills the frame and adds movement and energy to your photos.
While confetti cones and envelopes look lovely on display, they’re not essential for great photos. Guests often throw straight from the cone, which can result in confetti landing too quickly or all in one place.
Instead, a couple of baskets filled with loose confetti works really well. Guests can grab generous handfuls, throw it high, and help make for the perfect image.
The Best Confetti for Wedding Photos
Paper Confetti Works Best
For photography, I always think that the traditional bioderadeable paper confetti, either white or coloured, creates the best results. It floats, catches the light, and shows up clearly in your images. Choose the colour to suit your vibe. White confetti gives a more elegant look, while coloured confetti adds energy.
Petal Wedding Confetti
Some venues don’t allow paper confetti, so it’s always worth checking beforehand. You may of course just prefer to use petals which is totally fine! If you are using petals consider larger, colourful petals. These flutter more slowly and show up better in photos.
Smaller petals don’t show up as clearly in your photos, tend to fall quickly and often end up everywhere – including down your back and in your hair!
Confetti Alternatives: Bubbles and Streamers
Some venues sadly can’t allow confetti. If your venue doesn’t allow confetti at all, don’t worry there are still brilliant alternatives you could suggest to your venue and photograph beautifully.
Wedding Bubbles
Bubbles are a fantastic option and create a soft, romantic feel. They catch the light wonderfully and work especially well outdoors. Bubble photos feel playful, relaxed, and joyful—perfect if you want something a little different.
Confetti Streamers
Streamers are another fun, venue-friendly alternative. They add colour and movement, and look fantastic in photographs. Streamers are ideal if you want something bold and celebratory without using traditional confetti. Look for the kind that attach to the hand by a loop. These can be quickly gathered up and put in a bin bag leaving no trace behind.
Organising Your Confetti Photos
Although I specialise in natural, documentary photography this is one of the moments in the day where i will step in and help organise. While the two of you take a few quiet moments together after the ceremony, I’ll help get everyone lined up and ready, and explain exactly what to do.
Once everything is set, you’ll walk through at a relaxed pace while your guests throw their confetti.
Walk Slowly (and Maybe Stop for a Kiss)
Take your time and enjoy the moment. Walking slowly allows the confetti to float around you and gives me plenty of opportunity to capture natural, joyful images. If you can, perhaps stop halfway to share a kiss, a hug, or a laugh together these often make for particularly special photos.
